I am currently a Professor of Cellular Physiology at the University of Leicester. My PhD was carried out at the University of Bristol with Dr Robert Meech, which was followed by post-doctoral positions in Toronto, Cambridge and San Diego. In 1992 I returned to Cambridge, initially as a British Heart Foundation Science Lecturer then held a conventional University academic post before moving to my current position in Leicester in 2007. I am passionate about both research and teaching and have been a senior HEA Fellow since 2014. My research covers a wide range of physiological and pharmacological topics, including the role of platelet ion channels and regulation of GPCRs. Recent work has also been investigating the development of specialised structures in the megakaryocyte before these giant cells release platelets. Of late, I have started to recognise the importance of diversity and inclusion for scientific progress, and currently advocate for greater support of disabled STEMM researchers on a local and national level.
